Dark Underarms: The 4-Step Natural Routine That Actually Works for Men and Women

Dark Underarms: 4-Step Natural Routine | Rustic Art

Dark underarms are one of the most common and least talked-about skin concerns in India; and they affect men just as much as women. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in the underarm area is caused by a combination of friction, chemical irritation from conventional deodorants, improper shaving or waxing technique, and the buildup of dead skin that most body care routines completely miss. This four-step routine addresses all of these causes systematically, using natural formulations that exfoliate, lighten, tone, soothe, and protect; without the ingredients that cause the darkening in the first place.

Why Underarms Get Dark: What Is Actually Happening

The skin in your underarm is among the thinnest and most sensitive on your body. It is in constant friction with clothing, frequently shaved or waxed, and daily exposed to deodorant and antiperspirant chemicals. Any repeated irritation to thin skin triggers post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH); the same process that causes dark spots after acne. The skin produces excess melanin as a protective response to inflammation, and over time this accumulates as visible darkening.

The most common causes in order of frequency:

Chemical irritation from conventional deodorants: Aluminium salts, synthetic fragrance, and alcohol; the three core ingredients in most mass-market deodorants; are all known irritants on underarm skin. Daily application of these compounds creates chronic low-grade inflammation that accumulates as darkening over months and years.

Dead skin buildup: The underarm is almost never exfoliated as part of a normal body care routine, which means layers of dead skin cells accumulate and contribute to a dull, uneven appearance. This also creates the ideal environment for odour-causing bacteria.

Friction from clothing: Tight synthetic fabrics rubbing against already-irritated skin worsen inflammation. In Indian summer, this is compounded by heat rash and sweat accumulation.

Post-shaving or post-waxing irritation: Improper technique, blunt razors, or waxing without adequate aftercare leaves the underarm skin inflamed and reactive, triggering melanin production with each session.

The good news is that underarm hyperpigmentation is not permanent. With consistent exfoliation, targeted brightening, daily soothing care, and a switch to non-irritating deodorant, visible improvement is achievable within four to eight weeks.

The 4-Step Underarm Routine

This routine works for all skin types and is designed for both men and women. Steps 1 and 4 are daily. Steps 2 and 3 are applied after exfoliation or on alternate days depending on skin sensitivity.

Step 1: Exfoliate (2 to 3 times per week)

Tomato Walnut Body and Face Scrub Concentrate (100gm): ₹325

The first and most overlooked step in treating dark underarms is removing the buildup of dead skin that accumulates in the fold. Without regular exfoliation, brightening and toning products cannot penetrate effectively, and the dull, uneven appearance persists regardless of what you apply on top.

The Rustic Art Tomato Walnut Scrub uses superfine walnut powder; soft enough to exfoliate the thin underarm skin without causing micro-tears or inflammation; combined with tomato extract and fruit acids that work on surface pigmentation as the scrub is rinsed off. The oils in the formula moisturise as they cleanse, so the skin is not left dry or tight after exfoliation. Extended use helps reduce tan, uneven tone, and surface pigmentation.

How to use for underarms: Scoop a small quantity, apply to the underarm area, and massage in gentle circular motions for 30 to 45 seconds. Rinse with warm water. Use two to three times per week, not daily: the underarm skin is thin and does not need aggressive daily scrubbing. You can use your regular soap or body wash in between for cleansing.

Why it matters for darkening: Exfoliation removes the surface layer of pigmented dead cells, allows subsequent brightening products to work more effectively, and reduces the bacterial load that contributes to odour and inflammation.

Step 2: Lighten and tone (alternate days or daily after skin adjusts)

Reith Beauty Skin Even Gel with Radish Ferment: ₹475

This is the targeted treatment step. The Reith Skin Even Gel is a gel serum from our probiotic skincare sub-brand Reith Beauty, formulated specifically to address hyperpigmentation, uneven tone, and dark spots using fermented ingredient science.

The hero ingredient is Radish Ferment; a fermented extract whose bioavailability is significantly higher than the equivalent unfermented ingredient. Fermentation breaks down the plant compounds into smaller molecules that penetrate the skin more effectively, delivering brightening and microbiome-supporting activity where it is needed most. Alongside radish ferment, Tamarind Extract works on stubborn hyperpigmentation and acne scars, while Rose Water and Aloe Vera hydrate and calm the skin, and Bromelain (from pineapple) provides gentle enzymatic exfoliation that complements Step 1.

How to use for underarms: Apply 2 to 3 drops to the underarm after cleansing or exfoliating. Apply with a light hand: do not rub. Let it absorb and air dry. Start on alternate days or once every two to three days and observe how your skin responds. Once comfortable, you can increase to daily or twice daily. Avoid if you have shaved or waxed or if you have micro tears.

Important: This product contains exfoliating ingredients. Patch test before first use. Do not use in combination with other active exfoliating products on the same area on the same day.

Why it matters for darkening: The radish ferment and tamarind extract combination works on existing hyperpigmentation at the cellular level, fading dark spots over consistent use while the fermented base supports a healthy skin microbiome in the underarm area.

Step 3: Soothe and nourish (daily)

Choose based on your skin preference and concern:

For brightening and pigmentation focus: Aloe Vera Papaya Gel with Niacinamide (100gm); ₹300

Papaya contains Papain, a natural enzyme with well-documented skin-brightening and gentle exfoliating properties. Combined with Aloe Vera for hydration and barrier repair, and Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) which directly inhibits melanin transfer within the skin, this gel addresses pigmentation through a different mechanism than the Skin Even Gel; making the two work well together as part of the same routine. It also reduces tan and evens overall tone. Lightweight and non-greasy; absorbs quickly even in humid conditions.

For soothing, toning, and a luxurious experience: Aloe Vera Sandal Saffron Gel with Niacinamide (100gm); ₹500

Sandalwood is one of the most time-tested ingredients for underarm skin: anti-inflammatory, cooling, antifungal, and a gentle natural complexion-evener. Saffron is rich in antioxidants and has been used for generations as a toning ingredient. Together with Niacinamide and Aloe Vera, this gel soothes post-shaving or post-waxing irritation, calms heat rash, tones the skin, and leaves a light lingering fragrance that lasts for hours. The cooling effect is particularly welcome in summer.

How to use either gel: Scoop a small quantity and apply evenly to the underarm. Massage gently until absorbed. Use after showering and after the Skin Even Gel has dried. Can be used daily.

Why it matters for darkening: Niacinamide inhibits the transfer of melanin to skin cells, directly reducing pigmentation with consistent use. The soothing base (Aloe Vera in both) calms the inflammation that triggers melanin overproduction in the first place, addressing the root cause while the brightening ingredients address the visible effect.

Step 4: Protect with the right deodorant (daily, after all steps are dry)

The final and most important step for preventing further darkening is switching away from the products causing the irritation. Aluminium, synthetic fragrance, alcohol, and baking soda are the four ingredients most commonly responsible for underarm hyperpigmentation; and most conventional deodorants contain at least two of them.

The Gingerange Organic Deodorant Balm with Vitamin E and Pepperine Organic Deodorant Balm with Vitamin E contain none of these. Both are aluminium-free, fragrance-free (no synthetic parfum), alcohol-free, and baking soda-free. The active odour-control ingredient is Zinc Ricinoleate, which neutralises odour compounds at the source without irritating the skin. Vitamin E in both formulas nourishes and protects the thin underarm skin with every use.

Both balms are unisex; the scent profiles are distinct but wearable for any gender. Gingerange is citrusy and cooling (ginger, orange, grapefruit, peppermint). Pepperine is warm and aromatic (pepper, tangerine, nutmeg, jasmine). Both are ₹400 for 12g.

How to use: After completing steps 2 and 3 and allowing the gels to dry fully, swirl out a pea-sized amount of the deodorant balm and massage onto the underarm until absorbed. Apply on completely dry skin for best results.

Why it matters for darkening: Every time you apply a conventional deodorant containing aluminium, synthetic fragrance, or alcohol to already-sensitive underarm skin, you are re-triggering the inflammation that causes hyperpigmentation. Switching to a non-irritating formula is not optional in this routine: it is what prevents the darkening from returning even as you treat the existing pigmentation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dark Underarms

Q: How long does it take to see results for dark underarms? A: With consistent daily use of this four-step routine, most people notice visible improvement in texture and early lightening within three to four weeks. Significant pigmentation reduction is typically visible at six to eight weeks. Hyperpigmentation that has built up over years takes longer to fade than recent darkening, and individual results vary based on skin tone, severity, and consistency.

Q: Does this routine work for men? A: Yes. Underarm hyperpigmentation is equally common in men and the causes are identical: friction from clothing, chemical irritation from conventional deodorant, and shaving. All four products in this routine are unisex in formulation and in fragrance profile. The deodorant balms are specifically described as suitable for all genders.

Q: Can I use the Skin Even Gel every day from the start? A: Start on alternate days and observe how your underarm skin responds. The gel contains exfoliating ingredients (radish ferment and tamarind extract) that can cause mild sensitivity in the first week. Once your skin has adjusted, typically within one to two weeks, you can increase to daily use. Always perform a patch test before first use.

Q: Is this routine suitable for use after waxing or shaving? A: For shaving: apply the gels and deodorant at least 12 hours after shaving, once the skin has settled. For waxing: wait 24 hours before applying the Skin Even Gel as waxed skin is acutely sensitive to exfoliating actives. The Papaya or Sandal Saffron Gel and the deodorant balm can be applied 12 hours after waxing as both are soothing and free from irritating ingredients.

Q: Why is my conventional deodorant making my underarms darker? A: Most conventional deodorants and antiperspirants contain aluminium salts, synthetic fragrance, and alcohol; all of which cause chronic low-grade inflammation on the thin underarm skin. The skin responds to this repeated irritation by producing excess melanin as a defence mechanism, which accumulates as darkening over time. Switching to a formula without these ingredients (like the Rustic Art deodorant balms) prevents this cycle from continuing.

Q: Can I use both the Papaya Gel and the Sandal Saffron Gel? A: You can alternate between them based on preference. Using one in the morning and the other at night is also a valid approach. They work via compatible mechanisms; both contain Niacinamide and Aloe Vera, and the plant extracts complement rather than conflict with each other.

Q: Is the Skin Even Gel from Rustic Art or Reith Beauty? A: The Skin Even Gel with Radish Ferment is a Reith Beauty product; Reith Beauty is our probiotic skincare sub-brand anchored in fermented ingredient science. The Tomato Walnut Scrub, Papaya Gel, Sandal Saffron Gel, and deodorant balms are all Rustic Art products. All are made in our own facility in Satara.

Underarm darkening is one of the most reversible skin concerns when approached consistently and with the right formulations. The key is addressing all four layers: removing dead pigmented skin, treating existing hyperpigmentation with proven actives, soothing inflammation daily, and removing the source of chemical irritation entirely.
